Plans for the Planet: Olaf Breuning for Kids, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

The National Gallery of Victoria’s children’s gallery continues its exciting programming with ‘Plans for the Planet’ by contemporary artist Olaf Breuning.

Plans for the Planet will run from 28 June 2021 until 3 October 2021.

Breuning uses Plans for the Planet to place kids in the centre of the conversation about sustainability, and building a better planet for humans and animals.

Plans for the Planet is set in the natural world, as created by Breuning, including a forest and a lava floor (on which I’m sure there will be games of “The Floor Is Lava”). The spaces include the Nature and Us room, where kids contribute to save the forest, and the Just a Person space, where kids are encouraged to visually communicate who they are.

It’s a large-scale participatory exhibition for children that plays to young people’s hunger to explore, and engage with their surroundings.

Kids (and their families) can interact with the exhibition by using a specially designed swipe card to activate sections in the exhibition and contribute ideas, create illustrations and take a special selfie in an interactive photobooth.

Breuning has conveyed his ideas about our planet in a playful and even humorous way, engaging kids and inviting them to share ideas and empowering them to speak out to help shape the world for their future.

Plans for the Planet draws from popular culture and is inspired by the artist’s love of video games and movies from his youth such as Jurassic Park.
