FIRST LOOK: NGV Contemporary: Australia’s Largest Gallery for Contemporary Art and Design 

Love contemporary art and design? NGV Contemporary is set to open in Melbourne and it will be the largest art gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design in Australia. 

The new gallery will have thirteen thousand square metres of space to display captivating large-scale artworks, exhibition galleries, an expansive rooftop terrace and a stunning sculpture garden where you will be able to see a picturesque view of Melbourne.

Designed by Australian architect Angelo Candalepas along with a team of twenty leading architecture firms from around Victoria and Australia, the brand new landmark will be a symbol and celebration of the important role contemporary art and design plays in modern life.

The competition-winning design presents a highly accessible, timeless and awe-inspiring aesthetic featuring a dramatic yet inviting arched entry that will lead visitors into a wondrous and uplifting building featuring a spherical hall that will soar more than forty metres upwards.

The winning design team is comprised of: Angelo Candalepas and Associates, ASPECT Studios, BoardGrove Architects, Richard Stampton Architects, Carr, Andy Fergus Design Strategy, Steensen Varming + Mott MacDonald, Taylor Thomson Whitting (TTW), Freeman Ryan Design and AX Interactive.

The building will offer visitors an unforgettable architectural experience as they travel through the space of this thoughtfully designed structure, between levels and upwards to the topmost level where a spectacular dual-levelled rooftop terrace will present a breathtaking never-before-seen view of beautiful Melbourne.

On top of these fantastic features, the building will also include a large café connected to the public parkland, a new NGV design store, a sculpture garden, a restaurant and a members’ lounge.

When it comes to NGV Contemporary‘s exhibition spaces, the space is said to include a state-of-the-art display system that will allow the gallery to present significant works of contemporary art and design, international blockbuster exhibitions and dynamic program presentations from the NGV’s permanent collection from both Australian and international artists.

The exhibition space will also be able to offer Victorians a cultural experience like no other, all thanks to the building’s educational studios, lecture theatre, artist studios and scientific laboratories for the conservation of artwork.

The new NGV Contemporary will be located at 77 Southbank Boulevard, Melbourne. The project is part of the $1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation and is expected to strengthen the NGV’s reputation for promoting local and international art and design.
