National Gallery of Victoria’s newest children’s gallery exhibition ‘Making Art’ is now open, to coincide with the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces world-premiere exhibition, ‘The Picasso Century’
The National Gallery of Victoria’s kids’ exhibition invites Melburnians young and old to join them in a creative experience that’s colourful, bold and interactive. It’s been specially curated for children, teenagers and families and is sure to be a hit!
Making Art – Imagine Everything is Real
The NGV’s new art exhibition entitled ‘Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real’ gives families in Melbourne multiple hands-on activities and multimedia experiences inspired by the twentieth century’s leading European artists’ methods of working.
Some of the European artists featured include Georges Braque, Remedios Varo, Pablo Picasso and Natalia Goncharova. These artists lived and worked in Paris and were recognised for their clever and exploratory approaches to creating exquisite pieces of art and they’re all featured in The Picasso Century.
On top of learning about these artists, children are able to create their own works of art as they explore various art techniques. In the ‘red room’ there is a cut-and-paste collage activity
…that turns your creation into a digital artwork through a special screen that’s placed right at kids’ heights.
In the ‘blue room’ you can participate in the surrealist game ‘Exquisite Corpse’. Take a selfie and the add a head, body and arms into a crazy formation portrait…
The ‘green room’ has space for poetry writing…
….and the final back room is a soft carpeted area where you can create large-scale sculptures. The light show every 5 minutes really excites the little ones!
The gallery exhibition is an opportunity for kids to create a bond and connection with art and culture from around the world, be further educated on the creative ways an artist can approach work and see the world from a new perspective inspired by unique and revolutionary ideas.

This major exhibition feature the artist’s most iconic paintings, his extraordinary career and his connection to the many artists, poets and intellectuals that he interacted with in the 20th century, such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Georges Braque, Salvador DalÃ, Alberto Giacometti, Françoise Gilot, Valentine Hugo, Marie Laurencin, Dora Maar, André Masson, Henri Matisse, Dorothea Tanning and Gertrude Stein.
‘The Picasso Century’ and ‘Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real’ both officially open on Friday 10 June 2022 at NGV International.
