We are regular participants of ArtPlay’s booked workshops – but did you know they hold a program of outdoor, drop-in creative play sessions called ArtPlay Backyard?
Behind Artplay’s main building is a shipping container full of art materials which opens up onto a wooden deck and the patch of green next to the Artplay playground.
Every week is a different theme for making, doing and building activities. When we visit the theme is about exploring sounds and colour. There are buckets for dropping in objects, tin pans to bang in on the line and pipettes for creating colour combinations.

The play is all open-ended and you can choose what to play with and how long you stay. There are Artplay facilitators on held to provide some direction, but the structure is very loose.
ArtPlay Backyard is a fantastic free space in Melbourne’s CBD for families to explore and play together. It’s particularly good for younger kids as it’s the sort of creative play that helps them to learn about the world around them.
ArtPlay Backyard is held at various times of the year, rain or shine so it’s a good idea to sign up to their newsletter (or check back on this post for updated info!).
