The Room on the Broom stage show is showing at the iconic Athenaeum Theatre two to three times a day from Saturday 9 April to Monday 11 April, 2022. Get in quick to enjoy this summer holiday theatre show!
Whether you are already familiar with the Room on the Broom picture storybook or not, this hour-long show combines an entertaining story, engaging cast and laughs for young and old.
Our group of five are hooked from start to end. In particular, we love the scenes where we are encouraged to sing along, shout out loud and answer the casts questions.
The show is an adaption of the Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler’s picture book which tells the tale of a friendly witch and her cat who fly through the sky on a broomstick. When the wind picks up they lose some items but with the help of three new animal friends, they find the items and in return provide a ride on the broomstick. The broom gets rather full and they crash to the ground, facing a hungry dragon who threatens to eat the witch.
Never fear, her new friends save her from becoming dragon food by together turning into a mud monster that scares the dragon away. To thank all her new friends, the Witch fills a cauldron with items, does her magic and delivers a new broom fit for them all.
In this enjoyable stage adaption of Room on the Broom we see the general storyline followed with the added bonus of engaging songs, humour, dance, audience participation and clever puppetry. The set is cleverly crafted with a large moon surrounded by trees with most of the action happening mid-stage on the broom.
We are entertained by the various characters – a whimsical friendly witch and her various companions – a jealous cat, an energetic and loveably silly dog, a witty frog and a bird. We giggle at the funny banter between the characters, particularly the dog and cat. When the bright red (not so scary) dragon enters the crowd we are on the edge of our seats watching. The clever sound and light technicians ensure that the theatre is light enough at this time so children do not get a fright.
The show keeps the audience giggling, engaged and happy. We love seeing the book brought to life on stage with such creativity, extra content and fun. The stage show certainly provides entertainment for an age range broader than the book.
Our girls love the catchy songs and hum the tune as we leave the theatre. Ïggity, Ziggety, Zaggetty, Zoo”.
