HOT: Coburg Lake, Coburg North

Spend the day at Coburg Lake exploring two amazing playgrounds and the gorgeous green park and lake.

Coburg Lake Reserve,

Coburg Lake Reserve is a leafy green oasis in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and it’s the site of not just one, but TWO great playgrounds. You can easily spend a whole day at Coburg Lake park!

Coburg Lake Reserve, 2A Gaffney St, Coburg North

The main Coburg Lake playground is the Doug Hull Space Adventure Park at Lake Grove. From Gaffney Street you can see the highlight of the adventure playground, a rising rocket ship sporting several twisting metal slides. It’s very similar to the main structure at Buckingham Reserve Sunshine and Navan Park Melton.

The playground area also has a smaller plastic playhouse for babies and toddlers and a medium sized structure for slightly older children with a climbing frame and double slide, wobbly bridge, monkey bars and a small flying fox.

Dotted around the rest of the raised tan bark area are spring rockers, spinners and a bank of swings, including a bird’s nest swing.

Next to the playground is gorgeous Coburg Lake, home of ducks, geese and swans and framed by weeping willows. The playground is unfenced so best to be vigilant with running kids.

On the other side of the lake (which you can cross to using the wooden bridge) is the Carr street playground, set high up on the hill overlooking Coburg Lake. There you’ll find a flying fox, slides, a double springer see-saw, a circle of swings, a large scale twister game with a big spin dial and a colourful outdoor lounge room by artist Angela Polgaze.

All of the playgrounds have expanses of grass for picnicking as well as unshaded tables and benches, barbecues, water taps and toilets. Free parking is available within the vicinity.

There is a third activity area in the reserve with adult’s exercise equipment as well as lots of walking and bike tracks, including the Merri Creek trail.

The only thing missing is a great cafe in the park. I recommend The Eastern Bloc nearby or other reader recommendations for Coburg family-friendly cafes include Ruby’s.

Coburg Lake Reserve is a picturesque and fun destination for all the family and it’s worth a trip if you’re not lucky enough to be a local.
