Going to the circus with my kids is one of my most joyful experiences as a parent. I just love seeing my kids’ eyes shine with excitement as the lights go down, watching their awed expressions as they are amazed by acrobats and jugglers and listening to their laughter at the clownish antics on stage.
This spring school holidays experience the joy of circus with your family with Circus Oz, who are presenting Aurora under the Circus Oz Big Top at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
I was invited to review the 70-minute show and we just love it. Circus Oz brings its distinctive brand of Australian humour with some edgy, fun and exciting circus displays.
There’s jaw-dropping acrobatics, fancy foot-juggling, hair-raising balances, and my favourite – stunning hula hooping by a man (why do hula hoopers always seem to be women?). As with most Circus Oz Big Top shows there’s a giant set piece – this time it’s a huge swinging mop!
The action is kept rocketing along by the original live music of the Circus Oz band.
Aurora is the perfect school holiday entertainment for all ages – kids aged 2 and under sit on the knee for free.

- the Big Top is accessed via Birdwood Avenue, across from the Shrine of Remembrance;
- toilets are outside the Big Top;
- at the entrance of the Big Top you’ll find a few food stands and a souvenir/merchandise stall;
- The main arena of the Big Top is very warm so wear layers you can strip off;
- Show runs for 70 minutes with no interval;
- I think the show is suitable for 6+ years. I took Lady AB and Baby 2.0 and I noticed smaller kids had to be ushered back to their seats regularly; and
- the show features smoke machines and live music and is animal-free.
