Get Creative at Heide Mini Artists Children’s Art Class, Heide Museum of Modern Art

Heide Mini Artists is a regular creative program and children’s art class at Heide Museum of Modern Art for kids aged 2-5.

Mini Artists (previously known as Heide Art Kinder) offers children and their carers an opportunity to enjoy Heide Museum of Modern Art‘s exhibitions together in a highly interactive, engaging way.

Mini Artists spotlights a different theme every month. Our session focuses on the current exhibition, Jenny Watson:  Fabric of Fantasy. The art ranges from whimsical to realistic, and workshop leaders Bernie and Mel help the kids count horses within the array of paintings. Parents and carers seem to enjoy this as much as the kids.

There’s a story session and then it’s time to make some art.

Colour Sensation: The Works of Melinda Harper

There’s paint, crayons, glue and more, and the children are soon sticking and colouring to their hearts’ content.

Parents enjoy their coffees (included) from Cafe Heide as the kids sip babycinos and prepare for the next activity – a walk in the grounds to hunt for Christmas birds. Cardboard cockatoos on tinsel pipe cleaners adorn a glorious tree and there is great excitement as the children collect one each and return to the studio to decorate it as they munch on sandwiches and fruit.

There’s no sense of being rushed, and Bernie and Mel engage their young charges with natural warmth and encouragement. The time seems to fly. Participants are then welcome to enjoy the grounds or return to the gallery as admission is included in the ticket price.

Mini Artists is a beautiful way to help children begin to appreciate art organically. The ticket price is well worthwhile when you consider the quality of the experience for both adults and kids.
