Yes you heard right – there is a Redwood Forest Melbourne! To be precise, Redwood Forest is a hidden, unexpected gem in the Yarra Valley. You’ll find Californian Redwoods Warburton way, as they were planted there in the 1930s as an experiment by the Board of Works after the clearing of the original eucalyptus forest.

The East Warburton Redwood Forest is now Heritage Listed. There are around 1467 huge neatly planted trees reaching up to 55m high.

As well as breathing in the tranquillity, make sure you take a camera. The Redwood Forest is a photographer’s delight! It is particularly stunning in spring when the foliage is bright green.

However, even in the brightest sunshine, the Warburton Redwoods have a mystical element to them. The light on the ground is dim and dappled as it filters through the amazingly tall tree canopy.

People also build huge ‘dragons nests’ out of fallen sticks and twigs all over the plantation. You can help add to them but please don’t destroy them.

The Redwood Forest is part of the greater Yarra Ranges National Park.

At the bottom of the slope of the Redwood Forest you’ll find a more traditional bush setting with eucalyptus and fern trees plus the rushing Cement Creek.

The Warburton Redwood Forest walk takes about 30 minutes or you could spend hours there playing in the dragon’s nests and wandering around more of the national park.

Take a picnic to the Red wood Forest and eat within the forest or just at the entrance you’ll find the Redwood Forest picnic area.

While away a day away from the bustle of the city and enjoy the forest’s quiet, very peaceful and magical environment. Note you cannot take dogs to Redwood Forest.

  • There aren’t any defined paths in the forest and prams need to be able to move over the soft floor of leaf debris and twigs;
  • Free parking;
  • No dogs allowed;
  • No toilets;
  • No bins so take your rubbish away;
  • No BBQ facilities or picnic tables;
  • Grassy area next to forest for picnics;
  • Total fire ban;
  • Take snacks and drinks as the nearest cafes/provisions are in Warburton.
