HOT: Point Gellibrand, Williamstown

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park is a fun destination for free water play and for older kids, a place with lots of history to discover. Parks Victoria calls it ‘the richest heritage site in the history of Victoria’.

There’s no beach as such and the small patches of sand are rocky and full of shells so I recommend wearing shoes/sandals until you get to the rocks.

Then it’s shoes off! Go for a climb and a clamber and wade into the shallow water to cool your feet.

From the rocks you can appreciate the calmness of Port Phillip Bay as well as the expansive city views.

We spot seabirds in the water but no little creatures in the rock pools, only seaweed and sadly a bit of plastic waste.

If you get tired of the water there’s a small playground near the carpark with BBQs, picnic benches and a toilet block.

The playground is pretty standard fare but Baby 2.0 does like clambering on the dolphins. The ground is all soft fall if your kids are at the stage where they’re putting tan bark in their mouths.

At the end other end of the park are the remains of Fort Gellibrand and the stone Timeball Tower.

The only thing that’s missing is a beachside cafe. Try Sebastian or Kiosk d’Asporto at Williamstown Beach or head into Williamstown’s shopping area for Mez Mez or Carter Devlin Smith, my picks for child-friendly cafes in central Williamstown with the best food and coffee.

  • Free parking at either end of Battery Road, the carpark at the playground is closest for accessing the rock pools.
  • There’s no real shelter on the beach or at the playground so slip, slop, slap;
  • If you have beach shoes or even just thongs bring them as the rocks can be uncomfortable on little feet; and
  • playground is suitable for toddlers and the ground is soft fall;
  • playground has BBQ, picnic tables and toilet block; and
  • cycling or walking the bayside track is a great way to see the whole park.
