Queens Park Pool Moonee Ponds: How to Make the Most of Your Family Day Out

When you’re looking for something that’s fun for the kids but relaxing for you too, Queens Park Pool in Moonee Ponds might just be your perfect solution. 

Formerly known as Essendon swimming pool, this delightful spot is only open seasonally – generally from early December to early April. 

When the weather’s warm, don’t miss out on visiting for a day out that’s as enjoyable for you as it is for your little ones.

Moonee Ponds Pool

Queens Park Pool is known for its family-friendly facilities, including a heated outdoor 50-metre pool, a learners’ pool and a shaded wading pool with a cute frog slide. 

For the older kids or more confident swimmers, the 50-metre pool has two recreation lanes. They can practice their strokes, play games, or even join a friendly race. Beware there is a 3-metre deep water area down one end of the pool.

As the pool area is fringed by large eucalyptus trees you’ll often find leaves in the water. I don’t mind this but it’s good to know if your kids don’t like swimming with ‘foreign objects’ in water. 

The learners’ pool is ideal for younger kids. You’ll often see toddlers splashing around under the watchful eyes of their parents. 

Queens Park itself is famous for its ducks and duck pond – and some of them take up residence at Queens Park swimming pool! I’m not sure to what extent the ducks are moved off the learner’s pool, but they are cute neighbours. 

Take a break

After some vigorous swimming, it’s time to relax. There’s plenty of green space to set up your towel or rug. You can even borrow one of the sun lounges to set up base camp. 

While there’s a kiosk at Moonee Ponds swimming pool, why not pack a picnic? Think sandwiches, fruit, and some treats – it’s a day out, after all! 

Convoy, the excellent cafe across the road, also offers takeaway drinks, sandwiches and pastries that you can bring back to the Queens Park outdoor pool. 

Playgrounds and More at Queens Park Moonee Ponds

Here’s something you might not expect – Queens Park itself has a fantastic playground. 

It’s just a short walk from the Queens Park pools, and you’re in a space that feels like a whole new adventure for the kids. 

Take a leisurely stroll around the park, watch the ducks in the pond, and let the kids have a final play before heading home.
