Portarlington, a small seaside town on the Bellarine Peninsula, is now an easy and unique day trip for Melburnians and Melbourne-based tourists thanks to Port Phillip Ferries.

Port Phillip Ferries operates a twice-daily catamaran ferry service from Melbourne Docklands to Portarlington and we are invited to take a return ferry trip and to spend a few hours exploring.

Port Phillip Ferries departs from and returns to Victoria Harbour, Docklands and operates daily. It leaves in the morning and comes back late afternoon, perfect for a day trip.

The ferry ride is an adventure in itself, with views of the Yarra River, Bolte Bridge, and West Gate Bridge, and possible sightings of dolphins and seals.

The ferry is very comfortable, with outside areas front and back where you can admire the views, and inside upstairs and downstairs seating where you can enjoy the air-conditioning and watch the scenery from the windows from your plush seats.

The boat has toilets on board, free wifi, free charging stations, bike racks (which ideally should be booked ahead of time) and a kiosk selling snacks and drinks.

The trip takes 1.5 hours, with slow cruising from Docklands to Williamstown then faster across the wider bay until you spot the beaches and hills of Portarlington. There are lots of opportunities for great photos of the Melbourne CBD skyline, Bolte Bridge and Westgate Bridge.

A selection of local tour operators are available to meet passengers on arrival in Portarlington, transporting them to various wineries, restaurants, breweries and attractions.

Tips for a day trip to Portarlington with Port Phillip Ferries

1. Book your tickets online

You can purchase tickets on board but booking tickets ahead of time means that you’re guaranteed a seat. I am surprised by how many people board our boat on a summer’s Sunday, which means that no doubt the service is even more popular during Christmas/New Year/ school holidays/special events.

If you’re planning to take bikes it’s best to include the bike with your booking as there are only 20 spaces. The boat is popular with keen cyclists who take their road bikes to Portarlington for weekend rides.

Return tickets cost $42 for adults, $39 for concession and $27 for children (aged 4-16), family pass for 4 people ($120), children aged 3 and under travel for free. Group discounts for 25+ people is $26 per person. Bike are free. Prices may vary according to seasonality and peak periods.

Half-Price Return Trips with Port Phillip Ferries

Port Phillip Ferries is offering a special 50% discount on return trips to Portarlington or Geelong.

Simply join their mailing list by the end of June 2024 to receive a discount code, usable anytime in the next three years.

2. Claim an indoors seat by a window

Port Phillip Bay gets chilly even in the height of summer, so it’s good to have a home base that’s indoors where you can leave your stuff. The prime spots are the windows on the right (starboard) side going to Portarlington, and windows on the left (port) side going to Docklands.

3. For kids take snacks, drinks, entertainment

I find that for the first 15 minutes or so the boat is a novelty, and then kids want to do something else. I pack Nude Food lunchboxes, water bottles, colouring and books. On the way back I give Baby 2.0 my mobile phone to play games because he can’t read yet. Luckily there are free charging stations and Wi-Fi on board.

4. Lunchtime – Try Portarlington mussels

Once you reach Portarlington at 12:30pm it’s lunchtime. Because we have bikes we choose the closest and easiest option, a casual cafe, kiosk and restaurant. It faces the pier and the dog beach and serves pretty standard fare, including pretty good fish and chips and the famous Portarlington mussels.

If you’re after a more gourmet experience I recommend trying one of the nearby wineries. The Little Mussel cafe a bit out of the town centre is also recommended.

5. Sweet treats – Jam donuts and lollies

Portarlington’s famous sweet treats are from the Jam Donut van at the pier and the Pier View Lolly Shop.

The former is parked right at the end of the pier so you can’t miss it. They sell large sugary-coated jam donuts for $1.80 each or 6 for $10.

portarlington

The latter is at the top of the hill of the main street and is an old-fashioned pick-and-mix lolly shop ($2.60 for 100g). You can also buy ice cream there and it’s across the road from a playground.

Pier View Lolly Shop, 92A Newcombe St, Portarlington 0413 507 757

6. Plan a mode of transport

If you’re planning to just hang around Portarlington there’s no need to consider a mode of transport. The town is small and walkable (after the sizable hill from the beach).

We take our bikes because the foreshore is a nice flat ride and because I’m not sure how far everything is from the pier. We could have gone for long bike rides but decide to stay closer to the town centre because I’m worried that we’ll miss the boat.

If you only need adult bikes you can hire e-bikes from Bella e-Bikes who meet the ferry at the pier.

7. Portarlington Miniature Railway

Every Sunday 11-4pm (and Wednesdays 11-4pm during school holidays) volunteers open the Portarlington Miniature Railway at Point Richards for public runs.

Each ride is $4 (or $35 for a family day pass!) and you go for two loops around a flat track.

There are picnic shelters and barbecues on the site, a small playground, public toilets and the (rocky) beach across the road. Baby 2.0 says ‘this is so much fun!’

8. Pack your swimming gear

Portarlington Beach is shallow for a long distance and the water is still and clean. Once you tiptoe past the shells and grit the sand underfoot is delightfully soft.

portarlington beach

The kids enjoy wading out and playing games in the sand before it’s time to head back to Melbourne on the boat. We have dinner at Southern Cross station (which has some dire options to be honest) and then take the train back home.

We are still basking in the glow of our visit to Portarlington with Port Phillip Ferries – it really was a joyous, family-memory-making sort of day. I highly recommend it for families wanting a day trip out of Melbourne.

Next time we’ll venture further afield and explore some of the wineries and attractions beyond Portarlington. Here are some ideas of what else you can see and do in the area.

The waves are always pumping at URBNSURF, Australia’s first surf park! The huge facility in Tullamarine, close to Melbourne airport, offers Melburnians and visitors a crystal-clear, MCG-sized surfing lagoon.

For a start, they offer lessons and surfing sessions, with 30 participants booked into each side of the big wave pool lagoon. Surfers should book ahead, and spectators are most welcome to hang out on the foreshore, staying behind the yellow line.

With a premium restaurant and bar overlooking the pool, plus a playground and shaded sun lounges, this is a wonderful destination for surf-loving families and groups.

The nitty gritty details are available from URBNSURF‘s website so you can get inside and enjoy your session.

URBNSURF Amy Gardner images ()

What is URBNSURF?

URBNSURF Melbourne uses Wavegarden’s next-generation Cove technology in its surfing lagoon to deliver high-quality, authentic surfing waves every hour, day and night, year-round. Yes, unlike at a surf beach you can now surf at night, thanks to some huge stadium.

A while ago we were invited to try out URBNSURF as complete surfing novices. It turns out that learning to surf at URBNSURF is even better than learning at the beach!

Why is learning to surf at URBNSURF even better than learning at the beach?

Firstly, the pool is segregated by beginner, intermediate and advanced zones and the waves are controlled by a push of a button. The size, shape, power and frequency of the waves can be adjusted to suit all abilities, from first-timers through to elite athletes. That means for our beginner group you aren’t constantly being barraged by waves – there’s time to take a break, listen to instructions and catch your breath before the next wave.

Secondly, the water is shallow at the learner’s end and there are no mystery creatures or foliage hiding under the water. Kids can easily stand their ground as they wait their turn on the board.

Thirdly, the facilities at URBNSURF make the before and after surfing experience more convenient than a beach. Spectators can hang out on a day bed by the water’s edge and you can set up home base inside a bookable cabana.

URBNSURF Amy Gardner images

Can I get equipment and food at URBNSURF?

Yes you can!  The food, store and change room facilities are top notch.

And the best part? The surf shop and hire store are right there, the food options are right there, the hot outdoor showers and change rooms are right there. No trekking gear up and down the beach or making a sandy mess in the car.

URBNSURF Amy Gardner images

Dining at Three Blue Ducks

URBNSURF Melbourne is home to Melbourne’s first restaurant operations by Sydney-based Three Blue Ducks. They serve delicious, healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner and beverages all year round, with views of the lagoon.

Expect smoky flavours and locally-sourced produce cooked in the pizza oven, rotisserie and charcoal pit. The kids menu features tasty and hearty meals like half a roast chicken, penne pasta, crumbed fish and a cheeseburger.

You can visit Three Blue Ducks without paying to surf at URBNSURF. A great option for families or groups to enjoy the lively atmosphere, have a play at the playground and watch the surfers doing their thing.

URBNSURF kids burger Amy Gardner images

What else can you do at URBNSURF?

Other lagoon-side amenities include a children’s playground, hot tubs (for a sort of apres-ski experience!) and various landscaped spaces to relax and enjoy the view. I reckon URBNSURF is a perfect venue for birthday parties and group gatherings!

My kids enjoyed the playground and sandpit, watching the surfers up-close from the spectator viewing point and lounging by beach pool. Aeroplane fans will be happy as you can regularly spot giant aircraft coming in to land.

A concrete path surrounds the lagoon wave pool, and my kids brought their scooters for extra fun. Just note that children must be supervised at all times.

URBNSURF Amy Gardner images ()

Do we need to take a lesson?

If you are a beginner surfer then I strongly recommend that you sign up at the Surf Academy for lessons. All beginners, whether they are kids or adults, are normally taught together – but depending on numbers the children and adults may be split up into separate groups. Lessons start for children from 6+ years.

We start off by going into the hire store to put on our wetsuits (you can BYO equipment too). There are wetsuits for all seasons, as the water is not heated. The reason is that the amount of energy required to heat such a huge body of water would be unsustainable.

The lessons last for 1 hour 45 minutes, with a briefing on land where everyone practices their stance and balance first before spending approximately 30 minutes in the water.

There are two instructors with the group – one to push the kids onto the wave and one to catch them at the other end (and warn them to get off the board at the black line).

I am amazed that both Lady AB and Baby 2.0 are able to stand on their boards for short periods by the end of their first lesson. In fact, all the children are successful to varying degrees.

If you do not want to take lessons then you can book to surf in a one-hour block.

Note that URBNSURF is a surf park and not a wave pool. You cannot pay just to go splash in the water. Young children can take a soft board or bodyboard to play in the knee-high rolling waves in The Bays and need to be supervised by an adult at all times.

URBNSURF is an amazing facility that caters to beginners through to pros. It provides consistent, perfect waves day in day out, which means for keen surfers you’re not as beholden to the weather gods. I’m also told that because the waves keep coming there is less alpha-male posturing in the lineup compared to a beach, as everyone knows that they’ll get a go. This means that it’s arguably less intimidating for female surfers to share waves.

Get ready to #SurfMore all through the year at URBNSURF! Be sure to book prior to your visit as the pool can only accommodate a maximum of 60 surfers at any time.

A reader’s question inspired this post – the best things to do and places to go with toddlers, crawlers and babies in Melbourne!

Laura B reminded me of how hard it is to find age-appropriate activities for toddlers and babies in Melbourne.

She asked “We’re spending a long weekend in Melbourne this weekend coming with our ten-month-old twins. Any suggestions on things we can do with them – they will be in their pram but very curious about the world around them and love a good crawl around?”

Things to do with Toddlers and Babies in Melbourne CBD

1. Artplay, Melbourne CBD

Artplay is a City of Melbourne-funded children’s art studio and they run free and paid workshops and events for children 0-12 years. Lady AB’s first trip to Artplay was at 7 months old.

New toddler and baby activities pop up every month, so be sure to check their website regularly to find fun activities for kids in Melbourne.

Next to Artplay is the Artplay playground. It is generally more suited to older kids (and can be overrun by school kids on excursions) but babies will enjoy the sandpit, baby swings and Mali the elephant.

2. Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne CBD

A trip to Sea Life Melbourne is another thing to add to your list of things to do with a toddler. Babies are fascinated by fish and at Melbourne Aquarium you can get up close to sea life big and small. Under 3s get free entry!

If you’re a regular visitor then a membership (perhaps a combined membership with Legoland as part of the Merlin Annual Pass) might be worthwhile.

One of my go-to things to do in the city for kids, is an outing to the Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter within the State Library of Victoria.

Make the most of free weekly story time sessions, drop-in craft activities, and interactive play areas designed to spark imagination and creativity. Including fun and stimulating activities for babies and toddlers!

With dedicated spaces for fostering a love for reading, this children’s quarter offers a magical experience for families in the heart of Melbourne.

Step into the fascinating world of visual storytelling at ACMI’s exhibition, “The Story of the Moving Image.” From ancient shadow puppets to cutting-edge virtual reality, families can explore the evolution of film, television, and digital media.

Little ones can engage with interactive displays, create their own animations, and play retro arcade games. Toddler activities and a Pre-schooler Program run throughout the year with both free entry and ticketed events.

Entry is free for NGV’s two branches at Federation Square and St Kilda Road. Both galleries generally have at least one or two family-friendly exhibitions.

There are also regular art programs for 2-5 year olds called NGV Under 5s.

The Gallery Kitchen and Sculpture Park at NGV International are also great family-friendly hangouts. We’ll often grab a picnic and eat on the lawn if we’re in the CBD, even if we don’t visit the rest of the gallery.

It’s so much fun for toddlers to experience a bit of the country in the city, and watch the cows being milked, pat the goats and chase chickens.

Lady AB’s first visit to Collingwood Children’s Farm while she was still crawling – so don’t dress your baby in his/her best clothes as they’ll be on their knees in dirt, grass and barnyard floors!

The Farm Cafe is an excellent family-friendly cafe on-site with pram access, high chairs and a kids menu.

Tips for Visiting Dog Beaches in Melbourne

  • Before heading to one of these dog-friendly beaches Melbourne-wide, familiarise yourself with local regulations regarding off-leash areas, timings, and any specific rules for the beach you plan to visit.
  • To make the most of your pet-friendly beach visit, pack essentials like water, a collapsible bowl, and waste bags for your furry friend.

When you’re looking for something that’s fun for the kids but relaxing for you too, Queens Park Pool in Moonee Ponds might just be your perfect solution.

Formerly known as Essendon swimming pool, this delightful spot is only open seasonally – generally from early December to early April.

When the weather’s warm, don’t miss out on visiting for a day out that’s as enjoyable for you as it is for your little ones.

Sunscreen, hats and swim gear, check!

Moonee Ponds Pool

Queens Park Pool is known for its family-friendly facilities, including a heated outdoor 50-metre pool, a learners’ pool and a shaded wading pool with a cute frog slide.

For the older kids or more confident swimmers, the 50-metre pool has two recreation lanes. They can practice their strokes, play games, or even join a friendly race. Beware there is a 3-metre deep water area down one end of the pool.

Queens Park Pool Moonee Ponds px

As the pool area is fringed by large eucalyptus trees you’ll often find leaves in the water. I don’t mind this but it’s good to know if your kids don’t like swimming with ‘foreign objects’ in water.

The learners’ pool is ideal for younger kids. You’ll often see toddlers splashing around under the watchful eyes of their parents.

Queens Park itself is famous for its ducks and duck pond – and some of them take up residence at Queens Park swimming pool! I’m not sure to what extent the ducks are moved off the learner’s pool, but they are cute neighbours.

Take a break

After some vigorous swimming, it’s time to relax. There’s plenty of green space to set up your towel or rug. You can even borrow one of the sun lounges to set up base camp.

While there’s a kiosk at Moonee Ponds swimming pool, why not pack a picnic? Think sandwiches, fruit, and some treats – it’s a day out, after all!

Queens Park Moonee Ponds Pool

Convoy, the excellent cafe across the road, also offers takeaway drinks, sandwiches and pastries that you can bring back to the Queens Park outdoor pool

Playgrounds and More at Queens Park Moonee Ponds

Here’s something you might not expect – Queens Park itself has a fantastic playground.

It’s just a short walk from the Queens Park pools, and you’re in a space that feels like a whole new adventure for the kids.

Take a leisurely stroll around the park, watch the ducks in the pond, and let the kids have a final play before heading home.
