Ready for some old-fashioned family fun? Luna Park Melbourne is an iconic amusement park on the St Kilda foreshore and its laughing mouth entrance is on many a Melbourne postcard.

Every time we visit St Kilda the kids plead to go inside the ‘big scary mouth’ – otherwise known as Mr Moon mouth.

Luna Park Rides

Luna Park Melbourne offers a carnival-like atmosphere at all times of the year. It’s big enough to keep kids entertained for a whole day, but if your kids are old enough it’s also small enough for them to roam around freely while you relax at ‘home base’.

The iconic Scenic Railway and Carousel are probably the two ‘must-do’ rides at Luna Park. The Scenic Railway is the world’s oldest continually operating wooden rollercoaster and the views from up the top are magnificent!

Having said that, my kids favourite ride is the Spider.

Other more low-key rides include the Ferris Wheel and dodgem cars.

Note there are height restrictions on rides, with some rides only available for kids taller than 110cm, 120cm or 130cm. Sometimes an adult can accompany a shorter child on a particular ride.

Luna Park Melbourne Events

Depending on the season you can also enjoy other events such as Christmas in July, a giant Easter Egg Hunt or Halloween.

While Luna Park is a popular attraction in summer thanks to its beachside location, I actually think that visiting during the cooler months is a better time.

Fewer people means fewer lines…and the more energetic rides will definitely keep you warm!

During the winter school holidays, Luna Park often celebrates Christmas in July with Christmas decorations. On weekends you can expect fake snowfalls, Santa will be available for photo opportunities and there are chocolate balls galore. Plus Santa’s Elves gather kids around for Santa’s special Storytelling Sessions.

On our recent visit to the Christmas activation it ran for about 15 minutes so if you miss the hourly slot, you’ll have to wait for the next hour. The set-up is fun for junior kids but older kids may find it a bit kitsch.

Luna Park Melbourne Food

Unlike many amusement parks, you can bring your own food and water, unlike other amusement parks I’ve visited.

You can buy food from the fairy floss stand and the diner caravan. Parties are hosted in the vintage tram!

Luna Park Melbourne Tickets

Luna Park is one of the must-do activities that every Melburnian needs to visit at least once.

It you only want to go on a few rides then a single-ride ticket will suffice, or go nuts and get unlimited rides for better value for money.
