Pond[er]: The NGV’s Pink Pool

The NGV has installed a pink pool and it’s the place to be this summer!

Pond[er] is a highly Instagrammable architectural installation in the Grollo Equiset Garden at NGV International.

It was created to offer Melburnians a space to cool off in the NGV Garden and reflect on their relationship with the environment.

This sophisticated display of architectural and landscape elements is the winner of the NGV’s 2021 Architecture Commission and is designed by a Melbourne-based team comprising architecture firm Taylor Knights in collaboration with artist James Carey.

While the public open-air pool is the most spectacular feature, Pond[er], actually comprises two key design elements: a body of indigenous plants and a body of water.

The pink coloured body of water directly references Victoria’s multiple inland salt lakes. While it is fun and photogenic, the pink pool sheds light on the natural resource’s scarcity, importance and political implications.

In the graden you’ll also find beds of Victorian wildflowers that highlight our delicate and fleeting natural ecology. The flowers are arrange and designed in association with Ben Scott Garden Design to bloom at different times during the installation period.

The best bit? You can walk, skip and dance through the pink pond. It’s all part of the immersive experience.

But if you’re looking for a quiet, contemplative experience, I recommend visiting outside of peak hours. It’s busy and noisy on our visit on a Sunday afternoon on a hot day.
