Moorabbin Miniature Railway is a volunteer-run miniature railway that opens for public train rides once a month.
On the first Sunday of the month you’ll notice a large queue of excited families waiting for the Moorabbin Miniature Railway (or Steam Locomotive Society of Victoria) to open for its monthly public running session.
Moorabbin Miniature Railway is the only miniature train in Melbourne’s south/bayside and it is a very popular destination for local families. Combine it with a visit to the playground at Bricker Reserve and you’ve got a great day out!
Volunteers operate the railway on the first Sunday of the month (except January) and families can ride steam and diesel trains, and even a replica miniature tram around a miniature town, for only $2.50 per person. Parents of children aged five and under can ride free to supervise their children.
The track is long, with two railway ‘stations’, a overhead bridge, a few tunnel sections and plenty of opportunities to wave to other train drivers and riders.
As it’s a popular event I suggest arriving at least 10 minutes before 1:30pm when it opens. Then head across the overhead bridge to the railway station further away from the entrance, as everyone collects at the closest station when they first arrive.

There are a few benches and tables to set up a picnic or a party at the Moorabbin Miniature Railway and you can book a picnic table during the public run sessions at no cost. Otherwise you can book out the space for a private function from 11-1pm on the first Sunday of the month (except January).
There are toilets onsite as well as a small kiosk with snacks and drinks.
The playground at Bricker Reserve is next to Moorabbin Miniature Railway and features a few pieces of equipment in a tree-lined setting.
The natural palette is an improvement on the previous ‘plastic fantastic’ style playground. Bricker Reserve has a large picnic and BBQ shelter and public toilets.
Moorabbin Miniature Railway is a fun and cheap day out for little train fans and combined with a play at Bricker Reserve’s playground there’s enough to amuse toddlers and preschoolers for a half-day adventure.
