Kew Traffic School is a miniature city set out for children age 2-10 years to practice riding their bikes and scooters and to learn basic road rules.
It’s open to the public every day of the school holidays for kids under 10 years. During school term there are public ride sessions are designed for casual ‘play and ride’ for kids under 6 years old so your child can experience Kew Traffic School without being part of a school or kindergarten group.
On other days it’s booked for school/kinder groups on weekdays and parties and other private functions on the weekend.
It’s a fun and unique educational playground experience.
The traffic school is quite large, with a number of roads, intersections and a roundabout laid out with traffic lights, railway crossings and pedestrian crossings.
Kids are required to follow standard road rules ie to stay on the left side of the road and to stop when required.
In addition to the roads there are several structures for imaginative play, such as a police station, bike shop and petrol bowser.
There’s even a miniature tram!
You have to BYO bike/scooter and helmet and no skateboards are allowed. The track is also suitable for ride-on pedal cars though I don’t recommend bringing one as the bikes/scooters are much faster and can frighten tiny tots in slow pedal cars.
The traffic school is fully fenced so if your kids are old enough you don’t need to actively supervise and can take a break at a bench.
Inside the fenced area there are a few tables and benches to set up a picnic, a barbecue (no bookings) and there’s some shaded grass areas.
I recommend BYO food and drinks as there’s no coffee cart or other food/drink facilities on site other than a drinking fountain. There are toilets with change facilities on site.
Outside the traffic school there is a small playground.
Kew Traffic School is a great place to hang out with bike-riding kids which is more than just a playground or skate park. We spend 2 hours there (each session is 2 hour maximum) and the kids don’t want to leave!
