HOT: Relax and Play, Altona North

Relax and Play is a Melbourne indoor play centre and cafe with a difference. The Relax and Play concept offers parents and guardians the opportunity to RELAX – with exercise classes, yoga, massage, beauty treatments, manicures and pedicures – while their children get to PLAY under carer supervision in a large securely gated play area. As parents, we all crave a bit of time to ourselves, right?

We are invited to visit the first Relax and Play Altona North indoor playground, located in a huge, light-filled warehouse at the rear of Millers Junction Business Park.

The founders, husband and wife team Shaun and Caroline, are aiming to open another five or so indoor play centres around Melbourne in the coming years.

The high ceiling space is split into two levels. The lower level is a spacious cafe serving an upscale breakfast and lunch menu – try the soba noodle salad and the luxe Moreton Bay Bug brioche roll! Certainly better than your run-of-the-mill play centre cafe offering.

The kids menu has six freshly made items all under $12 – a picnic board, mini carrot hotcakes, eggs, pasta, fish croquette and fries. Hooray for a kids menu that isn’t all just prepackaged fried food!

The bucatini pasta with slow-cooked tomato, garlic, basil and parmesan is such a hit with my kids that they finish a full adult serving! The chocolate milkshakes are polished off in record time too.

There are numerous high chairs, a change table and for adults who are working, USB ports and free wifi. The high bench has perfect sight-lines of the whole play area.

The gated play area is supervised by qualified carers, so that you can be safe in the knowledge that your kids are in good hands. Just stow your shoes in the neat cubby holes and run free!

A spacious soft play area keeps little ones entertained – while a tall slide and climbing structure dominates the rest of the play area. The slides fall into an irresistible ball pit and an interactive digital screen that my kids just can’t get enough of!

The three indoor ingloos host the parties; a cute departure from the standard party room.

….and the beauty treatment room. They offer manicures, pedicures, massage, eyebrow treatments, hair styling (by appointment only) and makeup (by appointment only). There are even nail polish treatments for kids!

Both rooms overlook the play area so you can still keep half an eye on your kids while you get your mani-pedi done or take a Zumba class!

Relax and Play is a beautiful space for children to play and for adults to enjoy some ‘me-time’. It is open 7am to 5pm daily, which means it’s a great option for those with kids who are early risers who can’t wait for most things to open at 10am. Coffee up!
