If you don’t have kids, or even toddlers, it’s likely that a playground would have to be very impressive indeed before it caught your attention. Before Lady AB could walk we had a reasonable idea where the green spaces were in our community – a nice place for a BBQ with friends once every couple of months if the weather was nice! But over the past six months, necessity has driven us to develop a high-res map of every single playground and open space within walking distance of our home.
Getting the kids out of the house and letting them burn up some energy running up and down and round in circles in a playground is one of the most basic coping skills for parents of toddlers. But the need to do this on a daily basis means that if you want to maintain a bit of variety, you are going to quickly exhaust the stock of playgrounds within walking distance very quickly.
So to mix things up, any time we have an errand that will take us away from our general vicinity, we’ve taken to looking on googlemaps for new playgrounds in the area to visit.
Which led us to the Howard Dawson Reserve a few weekends ago.
I was meeting a friend at the nearby Mr Foxx cafe (kid friendly, high-chairs, lots of room for prams etc) and afterwards Lady AB went to burn off some energy at the playground.
Given that it was one of the stinking hot days we’ve been having recently, I was pleased to see that three quarters of the play area was covered with large shade cloths (Good for kids and comfort, terrible for photography – sorry!)

The Playground itself is very large with multiple slides, swings, tunnels and things to climb on. It’s got a cool castle theme with five linked turrets and has more than enough equipment to keep a toddler occupied for an hour or so.
Given that it’s not too close to where we live I can’t see us visiting frequently, but it’s good to know that if we’ve got errands out that way in future, we’ve got another playground to add to the roster.
