HOT: Kids’ Flicks at ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne

One of my childhood memories is my mum taking me into the city to watch a Disney film once a year for a school holiday treat. It was my first introduction to 101 Dalmations, The Lady and the Tramp and Fantasia.

Lady AB is almost 2 years old and I figure it’s not too young to introduce to her to the joys of classic Disney films.

Amazingly, I have not actually seen Bambi so when I found out it was showing as part of Kids’ Flicks at ACMI I thought it’d be a good opportunity for Lady AB and I to do a little mother-daughter bonding of our own.

Kids’ Flicks by-line is ‘smart films for smart kids’. Every Sunday and during school holidays they show a program of films which is beyond the blockbuster norm – such as animation from Studio Ghibli, foreign films and vintage classics.

My only warning is that with a 2 year old expect maybe 30 minutes of attention before the wriggling starts. Lady AB really enjoyed the half of the film she actually watched, laughing, pointing and naming the animals and moving and clapping to the music – but after a while she wanted to sit on the floor, climb the stairs and walk around generally, all of which was a hazard to other patrons (especially in the dark) so we left midway through.

I didn’t mind as I fully anticipated only seeing half of the 67 minute film. Fortunately the ticket prices are reasonable –  only $6 (ACMI Member $5) and the cinema is in the CBD so you can combine a movie with a visit to other kid-friendly CBD locations like NGV Kids Corner, State Library or Melbourne Central.

We had a short but enjoyable visit to ACMI but it’ll be great once Lady AB (and Baby 2.0) is older and then we can enjoy Kids’ Flicks together properly.
