Do you want to get up close with Australian animals? Then head to Kyabram Fauna Park, Zoos Victoria’s newest zoo about 2.5 hours from Melbourne in north-central Victoria and in the town of Kyabram.
Kyabram Fauna Park (or Kyabram Zoo as the locals call it) offers an interactive experience and a relaxed day out for the whole family. The parkland and wetland covers 55 hectares, making it twice as large as Melbourne Zoo.
What Makes Kyabram Fauna Park Unique
A Close Encounter with Nature
Kyabram Fauna Park isn’t just a place to see animals; it’s where wildlife meets family fun.
There are around 600 animals at the zoo and you can expect to see a range of Australian animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, Tasmanian devils, koalas, dingoes, wombats, cockatoos, emus and more. Check out the Kyabram Fauna Park zoo map.
We particularly enjoy the new reptile enclosure – the displays are brightly lit, informative and there’s a good range of reptiles to see.
The walk-through experiences in some areas mean that you can get right up close to free-range creatures such as kangaroos, wallabies and emus, whether your child is in a pram or walking independently. The aviaries are all walk-through as well.
There are also a few locations where you can hand-feed the residents with the provided feed. They are marked on the zoo map – don’t feed the wildlife in other locations!
Engaging and Educational Experiences
As well as the schedule of Keeper Talks on weekends and school holidays, Kyabram Fauna Park offers unique animal encounters.
From cuddling a koala to feeding cassowaries, Kyabram Fauna Park brings you face-to-face with Australia’s unique fauna.
A Playground for All Ages
At the entrance to the zoo (and open to the public whether or not you’re visiting the zoo) you’ll find a playground at John Pilley Reserve. There are also free barbecues and picnic tables there.
Kyabram Fauna Park Cafe
The new Kyabram Fauna Park shop and cafe building doubles as the entry gate, so you can’t miss it. When you’re ready for a break take a seat at the cafe, enjoy a hot meal, sandwich, baked good, coffee or treat and say hello to the meerkats at the window!
Other Facilities
Note that the zoo is predominantly outdoors, so on wet and rainy days there’s not a lot of shelter. There is a spacious parent’s room facility at the main entrance café. The room provides all the essentials you need to handle a day out with small children.
There are also baby-changing facilities at the Education and Conservation Centre (number 23 on the zoo map).
Accessibility at Kyabram Fauna Park
Zoos Victoria does an excellent job of helping ensure that all visitors have an enjoyable and comfortable experience at their zoos.
Accessible parking
There is an accessible parking spot near the entrance of Kyabram Fauna Park.
Accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers
Kyabram Fauna Park is easy to navigate with a pram or wheelchair but the paths are gravelled and uneven in some places.
Accessible toilets and facilities
There are accessible toilets located at the main entrance and the Education and Conservation Centre.
