Now that we are right into Spring it’s time to get inspired with your garden and to get outside with your kids – and Kew Nursery and Cafe will help you with both those aims.
As the name suggests, it’s a nursery nestled in the residential streets of Kew. It’s quite small but has the range of flowers, herbs, vegetables that suitable for the urban gardener.
The back quarter of the nursery is taken up by a very kid-friendly cafe. You can wheel your pram right to your table, there are multiple high chairs, a kids menu (though the standard menu is pretty low-risk so it’s suitable for kids) and the kids can even be served with plastic cups and cutlery if you wish. The staff are very welcoming and understanding of kids, for instance, telling me that the smoothies can be made without ice cream for littlies.

While you’re waiting for your food to arrive you can keep the little ones amused with the provided box of toys and books and even sit at the mini chairs and tables. However, Lady AB was much more interested in the plants so we felt completely comfortable leaving our things at our table to wander around the nursery paths.
For lunch I ordered a banana smoothie ($5.50) to start which Lady AB hogged to herself. I’ve decided that buying adult sized smoothies is a healthier and more economical option than a kids sized milkshake because we can share the drink, there’s fruit and dairy involved and it’s more filling than a frothy babycino.
From the all-day breakfast menu we shared the smashed avocado and feta toast with poached eggs, honey glazed bacon and dukkah ($16). I couldn’t convince Lady AB to eat the avocado or the eggs but she did enjoy the majority of my seeded toast and bacon such that I had to order another meal to fill me up.
The housemade chicken and vegetable spring rolls ($14.50) arrived quickly and Lady AB promptly snaffled one of them. She enjoyed dipping her spring roll and the tomato from the salad into the sweet, sticky dipping sauce. The rolls were crispy-shelled and the salad was fresh but it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.
Kew Nursery and Cafe also run free gardening workshops throughout the year so why not combine your cafe visit with a little learning as well? The kids can be well entertained by the plants and the toys while you listen.
