Maribyrnong Park is a large park in Moonee Ponds that runs along the eastern bank of the Maribyrnong River. It’s a popular destination for families because of the all abilities playground adjoined by The Boathouse cafe.
The wooden adventure playground has a nautical theme suitable for its surroundings and is divided into two sections. At the top of the slope is a large structure with ramps, slides, monkey bars and climbing walls. It’s covered with shade sails which provided adequate protection on the drizzly day of our visit.
At the bottom of the slope towards the bike path and the river is an interactive sculpture section with an undulating path between each station for scooters and bikes.
However, Lady AB and Baby 2.0 are most enamoured of the rocking boat. It fits about 4 small children and rocks from side to side with steering in the front seats to ‘drive’ the boat. We have trouble getting the two of them to give other kids a turn! In fact, I think every playground should have a wave rider boat.

While the playground itself is pretty cool it’s the surroundings that make it an outstanding destination for families. You can cycle there or even arrive by boat, grab a bite to eat The Boathouse cafe or grab a coffee and snack from the coffee window. It’s also within walking distance of Incinerator Gallery which runs two art programs for children – Incy Wincy Babies for kids aged 0-2 years and Arty Tales for kids aged 2-5 years.
