Town Hall Melbourne Tours

On a Melbourne Town Hall tour, echoes of the past resonate through its elegant corridors and opulent chambers. As you wander the halls of this iconic building, with an expert volunteer guide, you’ll be enthralled by the history that unfolds before your eyes.

From the regal Grand Council Chambers to the Portico Balcony where the Beatles once graced the crowds, each corner of Town Hall Melbourne holds a story waiting to be told.

Our tour guide, Jim, was very friendly and informative, and expressed an interest in each of the attendees reasons for being there. This brought about specific interests and allowed Jim to tailor the tour. I’m sure no two tours of this grand building would be the same!

One of our favourite pieces was the grand painting of Lecki Ord, Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1987 to 1988, who was the first woman to hold that position.

Another highlight was the opulent silver tea set displayed behind glass, which was made up for Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Melbourne Town Hall in 1954.

The Town Hall Commons, a new addition to the town hall, showcases contemporary works by Aboriginal artists, adding a fresh and inclusive perspective to this historic landmark. A testament to Melbourne’s commitment to embracing diversity and celebrating the cultures that make up the city.

Art And Heritage Collection Tour

As well as the Town Hall building tour, visitors can book an exclusive visit to the fourth floor City Collection. This curated assortment of 13,000 items encapsulates the city’s spirit and diversity.

With a mix of historical relics and contemporary art, this collection offers a unique perspective on Melbourne’s past, present, and future. From solemn memorials to whimsical finds like a bottle of Moomba spumante, each item in the collection tells a poignant story.

The Moomba display and Olypmics artefacts were real highlights. And some of the street art left us wide-eyed.
