Keeper Care Hub is a temporary exhibition at Melbourne Zoo where visitors have the chance to get up close and personal with some of the zoo’s animals.
Keeper Care Hub is open from Saturday 14 September to Sunday 10 November and its program is in addition to Melbourne Zoo’s daily schedule of keeper talks.
It’s located at the Carousel Park and there a small set up where keepers talk about their care, enrichment and training of animals. There’s also a couple of information boards and a small Boulder Field Play Space with stepping stones and tunnels.
During our visit, it’s the cockatoo’s turn and we see how it learns to weigh itself!
We then watch in awe as two magnificent macaws fly into Keeper Care Hub, winging their way just above people’s heads. For those who have seen the Spirits in the Sky show at Healesville Sanctuary, it’s a similar but smaller experience.
Other Keeper Care Hub events are in the Pelican exhibit, Red Panda exhibit, Lemur exhibit and Squirrel Monkey exhibit and held throughout the day.
Keeper Care Hub also highlights the plight of the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum. You can buy a cute limited edition tote bag for $10 ($8.50 for Zoos Victoria members) so that Zoos Victoria can plant plum pines to provide these endangered animals with a secondary food source, as Bogong moth populations (their primary food source) declines.
Keeper Care Hub is open daily with talks starting at 9:45am and ending at 4pm. It’s included in general Melbourne Zoo entry. Remember that kids under 16 visit free on weekends and school holidays!
