Brickman Cities Powered by LEGO City, Scienceworks, Spotswood

Brickman Cities, powered by LEGO® CITY is the latest exhibition by the LEGO Masters judge, Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught, the only LEGO Certified Professional in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s open at Scienceworks from Saturday 15 June until Sunday 6 October 2019.

We are invited to visit during the opening weekend and the place is pretty packed! Everyone loves LEGO but I suspect the runaway success of Channel Nine’s LEGO Masters TV reality series has meant that the little plastic building bricks are more popular than ever.

Brickman Cities, powered by LEGO® CITY is a relatively small exhibition compared to other touring Brickman Exhibitions that we’ve visited – Brickman Awesome, Brickman Wonders of the World and the Brickman Experience. However, there are a lot more opportunities to interact and build so we spend almost 1.5 hours playing the space.

The premise of the exhibition is that families can discover the world’s most iconic cities and then build their own creations. Each corner of the room is dedicated to Sydney….

Each city features historical dioramas and displays of present-day buildings. You’ll see castles and forts to massive skyscrapers as well as public creations inspired by the cities.

In the centre of the room is a representation of Lower Manhattan of New York City, with the story, scenes and sounds of the city projected onto 3D white brick LEGO display.

The projection runs regularly on loop and can be quite loud for sensitive ears.

Brickman Cities also features a collaboration with LEGO CITY with a wall showcasing the history of LEGO CITY sets.

To help families interact with the displays there is a scavenger hunt, where you have to count the number of LEGO City firefighters in the exhibition to be in the running for a $250 LEGO prize.

It’s great to see kids and the young-at-heart digging into the huge LEGO pits to build and display their own creations. The joy of LEGO is that it transcends age, gender and race!

For little people there is a DUPLO pit with a DUPLO baseplate wall. Note that kids under 3 years are free.

Brickman Cities, powered by LEGO® CITY is a must do for LEGO enthusiasts big and small and it’s a fun, educational and immersive experience. If you want to continue the fun there is a LEGO shop at the end – or you may want to word up your kids before you arrive that you will NOT be buying anything from the shop!

Note that your ticket is timed to manage crowds and it also includes general admission into the rest of Scienceworks. The museum contains many hands-on, educational and fun exhibitions including Ground Up learning and play space for under 5s and Beyond Perception space for teens.
